Florida Health Literacy Project | Everyone Deserves to Understand Their Health

Everyone Deserves to Understand Their Health

We’re building a movement to break down language barriers in healthcare across Florida communities.

Our Mission

The Florida Health Literacy Project believes that language should never be a barrier to good health. We’re launching a new initiative to work alongside communities across Central Florida, ensuring every person – regardless of education, language, or background – can understand and act on health information that affects their lives.

Every day, millions of Floridians struggle with medical forms, prescription instructions, and healthcare decisions not because they lack intelligence, but because the system wasn’t designed for them. We’re here to change that.

The Challenge We’re Addressing

41%
ispanic adults in the U.S. with below basic health literacy
85%
of online Spanish-language health information is written above the 8th-grade level
1 in 2
Spanish-speaking immigrants report limited confidence in understanding their health information

Our Approach

We believe lasting change happens when communities lead the way. That’s why we’re:

1

Starting with listening

Learning from families about their real challenges with health information

2

Building with, not for

Partnering with trusted community organizations who know their neighborhoods best

3

Making it accessible

Ensuring all materials and workshops are available in plain language and Spanish

4

Measuring what matters

Tracking real improvements in health understanding, not just attendance numbers

What We’re Building

Description

Community Workshops

We’re developing free health education workshops to bring directly to neighborhoods, churches, and community centers. In comfortable settings with trusted neighbors, participants will learn to navigate healthcare with confidence.

Description

Clear Language Tools

We’re creating systems to transform complicated medical information into clear, simple language available in both English and Spanish, ensuring no family is left behind.

Description

Community Partnerships

We’re connecting with local health departments, clinics, and community organizations to help them better serve the families who need them most.

About This Initiative

The Florida Health Literacy Project is a newly launched nonprofit initiative founded by someone who has seen firsthand how confusing healthcare can be for families facing language and cultural barriers. With a background in healthcare analytics and deep roots in Central Florida’s diverse communities, our founder is bringing together technology, community wisdom, and human connection to tackle this critical challenge.

We’re fiscally sponsored by a registered nonprofit, allowing us to focus on building programs while maintaining nonprofit accountability.
